✨ What Is Chatoyancy? The Science Behind the Magic
The mesmerising shimmer you see in both Cat's Eye and Tiger's Eye is called chatoyancy — from the French "œil de chat", meaning "eye of the cat". This optical phenomenon occurs when light reflects off parallel fibrous inclusions within the stone, creating a single bright band that moves as the stone is rotated — just like the slit pupil of a cat's eye catching the light.
In Tiger's Eye, this effect is created by golden-brown crocidolite fibres that have been replaced by quartz over millions of years, producing a silky lustre with rich golden-amber bands. Blue Tiger's Eye (also called Hawk's Eye) forms when the iron in the fibres oxidises less completely, retaining a striking blue-grey tone.
In Cat's Eye (most commonly chrysoberyl or glass-based synthetic varieties), the chatoyancy is produced by fine needle-like inclusions aligned parallel to the crystal's axis. When cut into a cabochon — a smooth, rounded shape — the stone reveals its signature glowing stripe.
